Why foreigners from all over the world travel to Ukraine for surrogacy?

For a long time surrogate motherhood has been a a topic for stormy debates and controversies around the world. Many European countries still cannot legitimize this method of assisted reproductive technology (ART) because of religious and ethical reasons. Infertile couples also respect the laws of their own countries and to avoid breaking them find solutions to their infertility problems in those countries where it is permitted by law.

Until recently, the popular medical destinations for surrogacy programs were India, Thailand and Mexico. However, when the local authorities of these states had imposed a ban on ART’s programs for foreigners, infertile European couples began searching for happiness of parenthood in other countries. Ukraine was also among them.

Although geographically Ukraine is situated in Europe, but actually is the third world country with a low level of economy, political instability and military operations in the east of its land, it managed to become one of the leaders among those countries who can provide medical services in the field of reproduction.

It is well known fact that the services of Ukrainian cardiologists, dentists and especially fertility specialist cost much less than their European counterparts, but the quality and effectiveness even exceed international rate. However, since India and Thailand had banned surrogacy for foreigners, infertile couples went to Ukraine. And, surprisingly, this country worthily withstands the influx of foreign patients.

Ukrainian clinics of reproductive medicine conduct high level surrogacy and egg donation programs according to local legislation. Residents of Italy, England, Spain, France, Germany and everyone who faces the problem of infertility can find in Ukraine everything they could only dream of, in other words, surrogacy program from 30 000 euros (which is much cheaper than in any American clinic), the best donor database, talented doctors, medical packages “all inclusive”, a competent manager who is in charge of a program and much more.

Once visiting Ukraine, foreigners see that, in fact, it is a beautiful and hospitable country with highly-qualified doctors, and later they come back again. So, for example, every third couple from Italy who successfully conducted the surrogacy program in Ukraine later returns to have a second child with the help of Ukrainian assisted reproductive technologies.

For more than 15 years Ukrainian clinics of reproductive medicine successfully and legally conduct surrogacy programs for heterosexual couples. Ukraine is an attractive destination, as the cost of this programs are accessible for European citizens, and local laws protect the rights of prospective parents – in the birth certificate, there is no mention of a surrogate mother and only the names of the intended parents are inscribed. Surrogate mother also cannot change her mind and keep a baby for herself.

For a long time Ukraine was an unfamiliar country to most Europeans. This state is not a member of the European Union, doesn’t have advanced economy and infrastructure, and to be honest, doesn’t reach the level of European countries. But Ukrainian medicine has always been popular among foreigners.

First of all, the main criterion for choosing Ukraine for surrogacy is a loyal local legislation and an absence of age limit for ART. Another advantage for foreign patients is a good price compared to foreign clinics. So, for example, in America, you have to pay separately for each service and a surrogacy program costs approximately 45 000 euros. And In Ukraine “all inclusive” package can be acquired with paying a fixed sum of 30 000 euros.

Foreign patients from around the world seek for the treatment in the reproduction centers of Ukraine due to several factors: a sound experience in the field of fertility treatment, positive experience of lots of foreign clients (high success rates of ART programs), abundance and accessibility of information about health centers, high organization of medical process.

Year after year, Ukraine challenges all the stereotypes slowly but firmly. We may objectively notice that competitors are strong enough on a current reproduction market. USA alone is worth a lot. There surrogate child gets U.S. citizenship automatically. Up-to-date equipment, luxurious service and convenient legislation – all mentioned details attract to America many European patients. However, acquiring services of any American clinic, most infertile couples pay for the brand “Made in America.” After all, for any European citizen the US gives more credibility than, for example, little-known Ukraine. But the last mentioned proves to the world that even a third world country can be among the best ones. And a field of reproductive medicine by applying assistive technology is exactly like this in Ukraine.

I wouldn’t put Ukraine and US at the same line, yes, both of the countries are popular way for surrogacy and egg donation but they have different orientations. US is popular and well known when Ukraine only start getting popular. But as we all know when you get much fame something start going wrong. I know enough about Ukraine to say that in close future it may become very popular destination not only in reproductive medicine but in kind of ways. Surrogacy in Ukraine is much cheaper than in rest of the world, privet clinic have same equipment as you would see in any European country, medical education have European standards. The service may be not perfect and they still have a lot of work to do but on my opinion, when you going somewhere for a baby, hotel or restaurant service is should less bother you.
Because of my work I have to travel a lot around the world, I’m 62 and don’t have children. I always was one of the women who didn’t want to bring kids to this life when they are not ready or when they can’t give them everything they will need to. But after 55 I decide it’s too late for trying, But my husband never give up, he was the one who told me about surrogacy as an option for us, he was the one who made enormous research. We did look on US as an option but I’m glad I didn’t make quick decision. I understand Ukraine have low economy level but is has no influence on paid medicine. I choose already clinic which we will go and feel very confident about the results.

Hi, Sheryl! I will appreciate if you can give me some advice. Accidentally I found this interesting article. Me and my husband have been trying to get pregnant for 7 years now. I’ve almost lost my hopе.. But the miracle had happened in the end of December 2014 – I finally got pregnant. It was the best Christmas present me and my husband could ever wish for! I can’t even describe how happy we were, when my doctor confirmed this desirable news! But the happiness had not last for long. A few months later I started to feel not good. I needed to be hospitalized immediately. The operation was hard. We lost a baby. The womb was impossible to save too.. My condition was critical. Though the surgeons saved my life, I had been through so much pain, and not only physical. Since that I’ve had a very severe depression.. I’ve been suffering a lot. But I found a strength in me and finally come back to normal way of life. Some of my friends then have advised me to try to find a surrogate mother. This idea sounds the best solution me and my husband can think of. But the problem is that surrogate motherhood is too expensive thing for us. May be we will try to find surrogate.. So we are trying to find some variants of how to overcame this. Has any of you had such a situation? I would appreciate any opinion or any suggestion you can give!

Hi dear! So hard to imagine your pain(( Be strong to cope with it! You are not alone and don’t be shame to write. If I only could hug all women who suffer(( I understand that it is very difficult to cope with such problems but it can be. We are all here in the same boat. In my young age I faced ovarian cancer and had operation and few cycles of chemotherapy. Now I am 36 and I also have endometriosis and hormonal stimulation is also prohibited for me cause my cancer every second can be back. It is difficult to cope with it and also hard to accept this fact of my life. But every my day I meet with smile and every my day is thanksgiving day. I am a mother, I guess I’m lucky) the only my aim for today is to live and care my family as long as possible. I had surrogacy treatment abroad, actually I was looking clinics in India, I knew that many couples went there, but fortunately, if it can be said so, my close friend had donation treatment in strange country Ukraine, I knew nothing about them. But she was succeeded and gave me good reviews. So I haven’t lost my time for long searching, just cannot imagine how people can settle info the got from net. I wish you to be calm, positive and brave to start your way to happiness)

This article is interesting, indeed. Since my husband and I are looking for the best and affordable option for us, I’ve been reading lots of articles and forums on this. Of course, US service is the one who gives lots of credibility and you definitely know that acquiring it there you’ll get everything you’d paid for. But I also agree with Sheryl that when you’re going somewhere for a baby, restaurants and hotels are the last things that bother you. Of course, it should be at least tolerable but from what i’ve read on forums and as one of my friends was there on Euro2012, the biggest cities can provide quite nice service. So I guess this country is not so awful to choose.

Ukraine was my choice for DE IVF due to their high success rates and very good reviews.
To be honest I didn’t expect to see so many donors with high education, sports achievements and truly attractive. We used biotex com clinic in Kiev and left really pleased with the result (success from the first try).

    Hello girls,
read the comments above and can say all of you have a grain of truth in your words. Especially as for the future improvement of the service ’cause you know Ukraine is not a such third world country. Of course, it still has many things to reform and optimize but all the changes can´t be done in, like, one moment.
To cut long story short, me and my husband don’t have any possibility to have more children naturally. When our baby was born I had an excessive bleeding after delivery and had to undergo a hysterectomy surgery. At that time I was happy with my little one but deeply inside I always knew I want more than one child. We adopted one cute girl and the whole process took like about 2 years. And now 3 years later we’re thinking about one more baby. This time we don’t want to choose adoption ‘cause at least 2 more years it’d take and also I’d really like to try surrogacy program with my own eggs, ‘cause my AMH level allows me doing it. So in search for the best option I’ve been reading various forums and articles, and come across good mentions of Ukrainian fertility clinics not for the first time. So maybe it worth the trouble?…

Hi guys! Kris, I think it worth to try) Surrogacy is also very difficult process and mentally hard to cope with it. But the final result will fully satisfy you) I was in Ukraine and this journey will remain unforgettable cause I have my priceless gift, my little sweetheart, and she is completely healthy. I had so many doubts and it was hard for me to decide for Ukraine. But the fact that it is not India and I can plan my baby in clean European country made me calmer. I made research and chose the most popular clinic among foreigners. They offered packages from cheap to expensive, all inclusive service like on resort hotels. Moreover ukrainian legislation is surrogacy friendly and there are no problems with child registration. Decision was made and with positive mood we were going to our aim. It was not easy, any moment, we failed the first time. But package included unlimited attempts and it have me strength not to give up. I guess God helped me, it was difficult to believe that we have a little angel. But we have) and it is our great destination. So fight for your happiness, don’t be scared to use surrogacy.

    Hi everyone!
I can’t agree with the statements, that Ukraine is so unknown or unreliable in the field of reproductive medicine. In comparison with US, yes, those who have chosen the service of surrogacy in this country, will say the best of the reviews. As they’ve got what they want! Ask the couples, who conducted the surrogacy program in Ukraine, and they will say the same – everything was successful! The most important is a final result. Sometimes it may be quite complicated, but almost all pairs I know, are satisfied with the treatment in the reproduction centers in Ukraine.

we’re just starting our surrogacy journey in Ukraine. after so many unsuccessful attempts of ivf, positive result is all that matters. i don’t know where this journey will bring us, but we have very good vibes. i’ll give a more detailed review soon xxx

I know that Americans travel to Ukraine a lot. have read a lot of insiders info about it, they just state that the treatment in the US is too expensive. the surrogacy is more than 200k dollars but in Ukraine this is different. like you may count on 50k euros to pay for the whole surrogacy program. the price includes also the meds and hotel rooms and stuff like this. I am not sure but I think that Ukraine is pretty much a direct rival to American clinics because of this. and if we’re comparing there are more European couples going to Ukraine than to the US for the fertility treatment.

  • TTCyears - 23/03/2017 Reply

because there is a huge issue here – how to finance your ivf or surrogacy. how to even budget the treatment, I know a lot of couples that are afraid of going for the treatment just because they do not know how much money is needed. because often clinics do not share the price-list and then couples that struggle with infertility find themselves in this very stupid situation, in the trap.
and even if you tell them that there are still clinics that treat their clients well.

    Cool pic by the way
also, trying to figure out where to go for a treatment, seen this article and began googling about ukraine.. it is definitely cheap and even cheaper than one can think but there is still a trust issue, cos I can’t imagine the stress people undergo when they decide to go to another country for something as important as ivf or surrogacy
