EVANSVILLE — Vanderburgh County Commissioners plan to ask the County Council today to hire SMG, the company which manages The Centre, to help it promote activities at Burdette Park, the old Vanderburgh Courthouse and the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum.
Commission President Marsha Abell will address the County Council, which meets at 8:30 today in Room 301 of the Civic Center, for funds to hire the promotional company.
“This is a great economic development tool,” said Commissioner Joe Kiefer at Tuesday night’s Commission meeting. “We could bring people into the community to visit the Old Court house, Burdette Park and the Veterans Coliseum. There are people who travel to see these old places, and we’ve been missing them.”
Since SMG already has offices in the area for its work with The Centre, Kiefer said costs would be low.
“They’re already here, established,” Kiefer said. “And they’re a nationally recognized company.”
In conjunction with the professional marketing, the commission plans to remodel the old courthouse. Kiefer hopes this will encourage people to rent space in the old buildings for parties, events or weddings.
Tuesday’s was the commission’s first meeting of the year, during which Abell was reappointed as the body’s president. Fellow Republican Joe Kiefer will continue to serve as vice president.
