RICHMOND, Ky. — A central Kentucky man has admitted to putting rat poison in his wife’s coffee.
The Richmond Register, the Lexington Herald-Leader and WKYT-TV report William T. Cain entered a guilty plea on Thursday to an amended charge of attempted manslaughter. He originally was charged with attempted murder.
His former wife, Deborah Cain, called police last May to report that her husband had prepared coffee for her that was discolored. She said she had been warned that he had made comments about wanting to harm her.
Cain, who spoke briefly when asked about his plea, admitted his actions.
“Well, I put a little rat poison in her coffee,” Cain said.
Cain’s attorney said his client knew the poison would cause harm to his wife.
During an initial interview with police, “(Cain) stated his wife argues with him over everything, and he could not take it anymore,” Officer Paul Hogan wrote in a report.
The couple married in 2001, but separated in August 2011 and Deborah Cain filed for divorce in 2012.
Deborah Cain, who attended the plea hearing, said she wonders why he did it when he could have just left the relationship.
Prosecutors are recommending that Cain be sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison.
Sentencing was set for Feb. 14.
