Local group seeking volunteers to help with tax returns

• Bookmarks: 3

— The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program in Evansville is again offering free income tax training and an opportunity to volunteer. Serving Vanderburgh, Warrick, Posey and Gibson counties, volunteers assist residents in preparation and filing of their federal and state income tax returns.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is a free income tax preparation service. Last year Tax-Aide served more than 2.5 million taxpayers. The Evansville organization assisted over 3,000 taxpayers.

Nationwide, there are more than 37,000 volunteers. Locally, 35-40 participate each year. There is a continuing need for new volunteers willing to contribute their time.

Tax-Aide training is free and available to anyone who would like to participate. All training and reference materials are furnished as well as computer equipment. There are no special qualifications other than experience in using a computer.

Training is scheduled to begin Jan. 14.

The only commitment is to pass the open-book test to become an IRS-certified volunteer tax counselor. In return, AARP asks that volunteers put in at least four hours per week over the period from Feb. 1-April 15.

Although the program is offered by the AARP Foundation, there is no requirement to be a member of AARP. There is no age nor any educational requirements, only a willingness to offer time.

Those interested in finding out more about the program and volunteer opportunities can e-mail TaxHelp@insightbb.com. Provide a name and contact information and one of the coordinators will respond.
