Long-standing bridge project lawsuit settled

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A federal lawsuit filed in Louisville in 2009 against the $2.6 billion Ohio River Bridges project has been settled after the states of Kentucky and Indiana agreed to provide funding for historic preservation and offer more opportunity for public comment.

News releases from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Indiana Department of Transportation said Friday that the agreement calls for the creation of a $1.7 million fund that will administer grants for historic preservation projects in the areas affected by the project.

The lawsuit had been filed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the environmental group River Fields. The groups questioned whether federal environmental, historic preservation and other regulations had been properly followed.

The project includes construction of new bridges across the Ohio River between Louisville and Jeffersonville, Ind., and between Prospect, Ky., and Utica, Ind.
